Mac Martin & The Dixie Travelers

Traditional bluegrass musician Mac Martin built a fine reputation for his rock solid, booming rhythm guitar work and was heralded for his vast repertoire. Martin was born William D. Colleran on April 26, 1925, in Pittsburgh, PA. Beginning in the early 1940s, Martin entertained audiences for over 70 years. For over 50 of those years, Martin and his band, the Dixie Travelers, performed regularly in the East Liberty and Oakland neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. They also appeared at bluegrass festivals across the country. Between 1963 and 2005 Martin and the Dixie Travelers released 10 studio albums on the Gateway, Rural Rhythm, County, Revonah, Old Homestead and Copper Creek labels (with 4 anthologies also issued in 1998, 2001, 2006 and 2023, plus a pair of fine live albums in 2009 and 2019). Martin also performed in duets with Ed Brozi, Earl Banner, Don Stover and Buzz Matheson. Martin passed away on February 28, 2022, at age 96. He is buried at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
